Mount Gambier

Mount Gambier

City in South Australia, near the Victoria border, 460 km/290 mi southeast of Adelaide; population (1996) 22,037. It is the commercial centre of southeast South Australia, and an important regional centre for a grazing, dairying, and forestry area. Industries include quarrying, the production of timber (especially pine), paper, cheese, vegetables, wool, and textiles. The town is situated on the slopes of the extinct volcano after which it was named.

The town lies next to a spectacular lake that occupies one of the three craters of the extinct volcano. Mount Gambier is also known as Blue Lake City, the lake being the largest and most popular in the region.
