Mountain Home

City and seat of Baxter County, in northern Arkansas; population (2000) 11,100. Mountain Home is situated 18 km/11 mi south of the Missouri border, on the Ozark Plateau, near the White River.

Located in an area with cattle and dairy farms, Mountain Home's economy also depends on tourism. Norfolk Lake, Bull Shoals Lake, and a unit of the Ozark National Forest are all in the vicinity of the city.

City and seat of Elmore County, southwestern Idaho, 64 km/40 mi southeast of Boise; population (1990) 7,900.

The original settlement, called Rattlesnake Station, was moved 16 km/10 mi to its present site in 1883. Mountain Home is now a distribution centre for wool and other agricultural produce; it lies in an area where sheep and cattle are grazed and fruit, sugar beet, and hay are grown. There are also gold and copper mines in the vicinity. The Mountain Home Air Force Base, just southwest of the city, has played an important role in its economy.
