Mountain View

City in Santa Clara County, north-central California; population (1990) 67,500. Mountain View is situated just south of San Francisco Bay, northeast of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and next to Palo Alto. It is a key part of Silicon Valley; the first silicon chip, paving the way for the IT revolution, was developed here.

Mountain View was incorporated in 1902, and developed as a publishing and fruit packing centre. Moffet Field Naval Air Station (1929) and NASA's Ames Research Center lie to the northeast. The city's main manufactures are now computer components, systems, and software. Other prominent businesses include consultancy and capital management.
