Mountain lions (also called cougars), the fourth largest cat species, were declared extinct in the Eastern United States in the 1960s, and were rarely seen in the West, according to National Geographic.
The deep arroyos and often dry Santa Fe River are perfect conduits for urban traveling bears, mountain lions, coyotes and their prey.
Mountain lions normally stay with their mothers until they are 12-18 months old.
