Mountmellick

Market town in County Laois, Republic of Ireland, 11 km/7 mi northwest of Portlaoise; population (2002) 2,500. Mountmellick was originally founded by Quakers in the 17th century. The town gives its name to a kind of white-on-white embroidery.

The first Quaker (Society of Friends) school in Ireland was opened here in 1677. The town subsequently became a prosperous linen-spinning centre and still contains buildings dating from the 18th century.

Some 6 km/4 mi northwest of Mountmellick, at Rosenallis, is the oldest Quaker graveyard in Ireland.
