Mourne Mountains

Mountain range in the south of County Down, Northern Ireland, extending from above Newcastle to Carlingford Lough. The highest summit is Slieve Donard; height 852 m/2,795 ft. The mountains are of granite.

Byline: BRIAN HUTTON A PHOTOGRAPH of a horse and rider galloping across a beach under the Mourne Mountains was yesterday unveiled as the winning entry in a contest to capture the spirit of Ireland.
Campers were rescued from the Mourne mountains this morning after their pitch was washed out by torrential rain.
He will be camping out on parts of the route which are very remote and wild and include such dramatic scenery as the Mourne Mountains and the Giant's Causeway.
