Movius, Hallam L(eonard), Jr (1907-1987)

US archaeologist. A leading authority on Stone Age Ireland and France, he was best known for his work on Périgordian and Aurignacian cultures in France, where his annual excavations at Abri Pataud (1958-73) became a celebrated training ground for students. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, he was a Harvard professor (1930-77) and curator at the Peabody Museum (1950-77).
