Mphahlele, Es'kia (Ezekiel) (1919–2008)

South African literary critic, journalist, and novelist. He was best known for his autobiography Down Second Avenue (1959) and for his influential critical work The African Image (1962; revised edition 1974), which is indicative of his lifelong search for a black aesthetic. He also published several collections of short stories and the novels The Wanderers (1971), which reflects his experience of exile (1957–77) from South Africa; Chirundu (1979); and Themes of Alienation and African Humanism (1999).

Africa My Music (1984) is a sequel to his autobiography.
