Carmel, Mount

Group of mountains in northwest Israel, near the Mediterranean coast, sheltering the port of Haifa; maximum height 552 m/1,812 ft; length 30 km/19 mi.

Al Muhraqa (‘place of burning’) on the summit of Mount Carmel is the reputed scene of the Hebrew prophet Elijah's triumph over the prophets of Baal. The Carmelite order was founded near here by St Berthold in 1156. Mount Carmel is the headquarters of the Baha'i religion.
