Mount Isa

Town in northwest Queensland, Australia, on the River Leichhardt, 1,811 km/1,125 mi northwest of Brisbane; population (2001) 20,500. Mount Isa is a centre for silver-, lead-, and zinc-mining.

A prospector called John Miles discovered silver, lead, and zinc ores here in 1923. The mine at Mount Isa is the largest producer of silver in Australia, and the second-largest producer of lead and zinc.

Uranium ore was discovered at Mary Kathleen, 64 km/40 mi away, between 1950–54. The site was mined between 1958–1963, and production recommenced in 1975 and ceased in 1982.
