Mount Angel

City in Marion County, northwestern Oregon; population (1990) 2,800. Located 24 km/15 mi northeast of Salem, the city is named after a nearby butte (which stands 101 m/330 ft high).

Mount Angel Abbey was established on the butte in 1883 by Benedictine monks from Switzerland. Every year, the religious community hosts a Bach festival in July, and an Oktoberfest. The abbey's library was designed by the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.
