Mtskheta

Small historical town in Georgia, 21 km/13 mi northwest of Tbilisi; population (1990 est) 10,000. It is a treasury of Georgian architecture dating from the 6th–11th centuries.

Mtskheta has been known as a town since the early 4th century, and was the capital of Iberia (East Georgia) until superseded by Tiflis (now Tbilisi) in the mid-6th century, after which it remained the religious centre of Georgia. The ruins of ancient settlements (dating from the 10th century BC) have been excavated near the town.
