Much Wenlock

Town in Shropshire, England, on the River Severn, 19 km/12 mi southeast of Shrewsbury; population (2001) 3,050. Wenlock is an agricultural centre, and manufactures bricks and tiles. It dates from the Middle Ages. To the southwest of the town is the limestone ridge of Wenlock Edge (240 m–290 m/800–950 ft).

The town includes the ruins of Wenlock Priory, originally founded as a convent in the 7th century and later a priory for Cluniac monks. There is also a 16th-century half-timbered guildhall and the church of Holy Trinity, parts of which are Norman. Coal and iron were mined in the area until recently.
