    0.01 sec.

Mudie, Charles Edward (1818–1890)

English bookseller, the founder of Mudie's Library in 1842. He moved from Bloomsbury to Oxford Street in 1852, and opened branches in Bristol and Manchester. At its peak in 1888 the library had 40,000 subscribers, but it declined and was closed in 1937.

Mudie was a religious and philanthropic person, but had to defend himself against charges of priggishness in his book selection. He published Stray Leaves (a collection of hymns) in 1872.
