Mühlhausen

Town in the Land (administrative region) of Thuringia, Germany, on the River Unstrut, 48 km/30 mi northwest of Erfurt; population (1995) 40,300. There are engineering and textile industries. The town dates from the Middle Ages.

In the 13th century, Mühlhausen belonged to the Teutonic Knights and was a member of the Hanseatic League trade federation. In the 1520s it was the headquarters of Thomas Müntzer, leader of the Peasants' Revolt, who was executed here in 1525. There are numerous Romanesque and Gothic buildings.
