Muirkirk

Town in East Ayrshire unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the River Ayr 16 km/10 mi northeast of Cumnock; population (2001) 1,630. Coal is mined in the vicinity, and local agriculture specializes in sheep farming.

In the 17th-century Muirkirk was associated with the Covenanters, a group fighting for Scottish religious and political liberty.
