Chibcha

Member of an American Indian people of Colombia, whose high chiefdom was conquered by the Spanish in 1538. Their practice of covering their chief with gold dust, during rituals, fostered the legend of the ‘Lost City’ of El Dorado (the Golden Man), which was responsible for many failed expeditions into the interior of the continent.

The original story of El Dorado--"the gilded one"--describes a ritual in which the chief of the Andean Muisca nation, covered in gold dust, made offerings of gold into a mountain lake.
And the patron saint chosen by Colombian salt miners to be their protector, Our Lady of the Rosary of Guasa, reflects the influence of the Muisca in the name; in the indigenous dialect, guasa is the word for big hole.
