Mukhtar, Said Omar al-

    0.01 sec.

Mukhtar, Said Omar al- (1862–1931)

Libyan resistance leader. A loyal representative of the Sanusiya order, he came to symbolize the resistance to, and the struggle against, Italian occupation. He led the insurrection in the Jabal al-Akhdar region of Cyrenaica 1922–31. He was captured and hanged in 1931 once he was cut off from his support base along the border with Egypt. His death marked the end of early Libyan resistance.
