Munster

Historic southern province of the Republic of Ireland, comprising the counties of Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, North and South Tipperary, and Waterford; area 24,140 sq km/9,320 sq mi; population (2002) 1,100,600.

Before Henry II's reign, Munster was divided into two kingdoms, Desmond and Thomond. The English conquest of Ireland began during Henry II's reign, and the province was settled by the English in plantations from 1586.

Munster

Town in Lake County, in the far northwest of Indiana, just south of Hammond; population (1990) 19,900. It is a primarily residential community, with a variety of light industries.

Munster began as a stop for pioneers headed for Chicago. It developed initially into a farming community and then became part of the industrialized Calumet area. It is the site of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Monastery, which contains several shrines.
