Mundelein

Village in Lake County, northeastern Illinois; population (1990) 21,200. Mundelein lies on the shores on Loch Lomond and St Mary and Diamond lakes, 55 km/34 mi north of Chicago. It is a residential community and a religious and educational centre.

Mundelein was founded in 1835. The village changed names many times before being named after George William Mundelein, the Archbishop of Chicago, who established the University of St Mary of the Lake–Mundelein Seminary here early in the 20th century.
