Qattara Depression

Area of salt marsh in the Western Desert, Egypt, up to 134 m/440 ft 125 m/400 ft below sea level; area 20,000 sq km/7,500 sq mi. Its very soft sand, caused by seepage of groundwater, makes it virtually impassable to vehicles, and it protected the left flank of the Allied armies before and during the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942.
