Murnau, F W (1888–1931)

German silent-film director. His Nosferatu (1922) is an influential version of the Dracula story. He moved to Hollywood, where he made one of the last great classics of the silent era, Sunrise (1927).

During the era of German expressionism, Murnau won acclaim for the powerful imagery and inventive employment of a ‘subjective’ moving camera in Der letzte Mann/The Last Laugh (1924). His other films include Satanas (1919), Faust (1926), and Tabu (1931).
