Murom

Murom

City and river port in Vladimir oblast (region), western Russian Federation, situated on the River Oka, 140 km/87 mi southwest of Nizhniy-Novgorod; population (1996 est) 126,000. Murom has engineering, textile, and woodworking industries, and contains a number of imposing churches dating from the 16th to 18th centuries (including the Church of Cosmos and Damian, 1565; Cathedral of the Annunciation, 1664).

Murom was first mentioned in chronicles of the 9th century. It became the capital of Murom principality in the 12th century, and part of Muscovy in 1392.
