Murphysboro

City and seat of Jackson County, in southwestern Illinois, on the Big Muddy River, 11 km/7 mi northwest of Carbondale; population (1990) 9,200.

Settled in 1850, Murphysboro was the secret headquarters during the Civil War of the ‘Knights of the Golden Circle’, a group of Confederate sympathizers within the Union. Feed and fertilizer are among the products now manufactured here. Kinkaid Lake and Lake Murphysboro State Park are situated to the northwest.
