Murtopo (or Moertupo), Ali (died 1994)

Indonesian soldier and politician, a close aide of President Suharto. During the 1960s he headed OPSUS, Indonesia's intelligence agency. Subsequently he ran the political side of Indonesia's campaign against West Irian (now Irian Jaya) and East Timor. He was also one of the architects of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
