Muskegon

City, port, and administrative headquarters of Muskegon County, west Michigan, USA, on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Muskegon River, 56 km/35 mi northwest of Grand Rapids; population (2000) 40,100. It is a service and distribution centre, processing timber from forests to the north, and fruit from the agricultural lake-shore regions to the south. Heavy machinery, metal products, vehicle parts, and sporting goods are manufactured. Tourism is also important to the economy. The Muskegon Business College (1885) and Muskegon Community College (1926) are both in the city.

The town was laid out in 1849, and developed as a major sawmill facility.Muskegon was rebuilt after a fire in 1890. It is county seat of Muskegon county.
