Muskogean

Dominant American Indian language family of the southeast USA. It is divided into Eastern and Western branches. The Eastern group includes the Alabama and Koasati languages of Texas and Louisiana; the Muskogee dialects of the Creek and Seminole of Oklahoma and Alabama; and Miccosukee, spoken by the Seminole of southern Florida. The Western branch contains the languages of the Chickasaw and Choctaw of Oklahoma and Mississippi. The Muskogean languages of the Houma, Yamasee, and Natchez are now extinct.
