Mutare

Industrial town in the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe, 258 km/160 mi southeast of Harare; population (1992) 131,800. The chief town of Manicaland province, it lies on the main road and railway to Mozambique. Industries include vehicle assembly, engineering, tobacco, textiles, and paper. Products include citrus fruits, softwoods, and wattle.

In ancient times the district was an important gold-producing area.
