Muti, Riccardo (1941– )
Italian conductor. Artistic director of La Scala, Milan, Italy, from 1986, he was previously conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, 1973–82, and the Philadelphia Orchestra 1980–92. He is equally at home with operatic or symphonic repertoire and performs with bravura, energy, and scrupulous detail. He is known as a purist.
