Mwanza

Town in northern Tanzania, located in a deep inlet on the south shore of Lake Victoria; population (1994 est) 260,000. It is the administrative focus for the densely settled Mwanza region, and the port is the capital of Mwanza Region, handling much of the country's trade across Lake Victoria with Kenya and Uganda. It is linked by rail with Dodoma and Dar es Salaam. Industries include meat packing and the manufacture of cotton textiles. The East African Institute for Medical Research was founded in Mwanza in 1949.
