My Tho

Port and capital of Tien Giang province, southern Vietnam, situated on the northern branch of the Mekong delta, 70 km/43 mi southwest of Ho Chi Minh City; population (2000 est) 117,800. A former naval base, My Tho is linked to Ho Chi Minh City by rail. The surrounding region produces rice, coconuts, areca nuts, betel, oranges, bananas, maize, tobacco, and sugar cane.

The city was under Cambodian rule until annexation by the Annamese in the 17th century. It was controlled by the French 1862–1954.
