Mykolayiv

Port and naval base in southern Ukraine, situated on the northern shore of the Black Sea, 110 km/68 mi northeast of Odessa; population (2001) 514,100. It is capital of an oblast of the same name, and lies at the confluence of the Southern Bug and Ingul rivers. Its industries include shipbuilding and the manufacture of agricultural machinery.

Mykolayiv was founded in 1784 as a fortress town. During World War II, the city was occupied by Nazi forces (1941–44), and suffered extensive damage.
