City in Horry County, eastern South Carolina; population (2000) 22,800. Myrtle Beach lies on the Atlantic Ocean, 138 km/86 mi northeast of Charleston.

A vacation centre that is busy all year round, Myrtle Beach (named after the profuse myrtle bushes hereabouts) has also grown in popularity as a permanent retirement community, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s. The Grand Strand region, of which the city is the centre, contains numerous high-rise apartment blocks, golf courses, and a convention centre. Myrtle Beach State Park is also located in the vicinity.
