Mysliveček, Josef (1737–1781)

Bohemian composer. Between 1767 and 1780 he wrote about 30 operas, most to texts by Metastasio, for the principal theatres in Italy. His oratorio Abrame ed Isacco (1776) was admired by Mozart.

He studied organ and composition in Prague, and published there in 1760 a set of symphonies named after the first six months of the year. In 1763 he went to study with Giovanni Battista Pescetti in Venice, and a year later produced his first opera in Parma. He also visited Munich, where he met Mozart in 1777 (they had already met in 1772).
