myxomatosis

Contagious, usually fatal, virus infection of rabbits which causes much suffering. It has been deliberately introduced in the UK and Australia since the 1950s to reduce the rabbit population.

I queried the stated reason for this, ie myxamatosis.
Myxamatosis, a viral illness most often transmitted by mosquitoes but occasionally by fleas, mites or flies, doesn't affect humans, but has a high mortality rate among European rabbit strains common in Oregon.
