whirling disease

Parasitic disease of trout. The parasite Myxobolus cerebralis spends part of its life cycle in tubifex worms, before moving to trout where it consumes the cartilage causing eventual death. Infected fish start to swim in circles after their spines have been destroyed, hence the name.
