Nägeli, Hans Georg

    0.01 sec.

Nägeli, Hans Georg (1773–1836)

Swiss composer, teacher, and publisher. In 1803 he began to publish a series entitled Répertoire des clavecinistes and included in it Beethoven's sonatas Op. 31 nos. 1 and 2, adding four bars to the former, much to the composer's annoyance.

He studied at Zürich and Bern and began to publish music at Zürich in 1792. He established the Schweizerbund choral society, which soon formed branches, and reformed music teaching in schools on the lines of Pestalozzi's education system. He also wrote on music education and lectured on music in Switzerland and Germany. He wrote 15 books of popular songs, including Freut euch des Lebens and Lied vom Rhein.
