Nègre, Charles (1820-1880)

French photographer. Originally a painter, he turned to photography after learning the waxed paper process from Gustave Le Gray 1851. He began by producing everyday street scenes as studies for his paintings but soon embarked on a series of documentary projects which included studies of Chartres Cathedral, Provence, and the Imperial Asylum at Vincennes.
