Nord

Département in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, bordered in the north by Belgium; area 5,738 sq km/2,215 sq mi; population (1999 est) 2,555,000. The Flanders canal system connects the rivers Sambre, Esceaut, Scarpe, Lys, Deûle, and Yser. Nord has an important history as one of the major industrial regions of France, with textile and metallurgical plants. Wheat, oats, sugar beet, potatoes, and vegetables are grown in the irrigated soil. The principal towns include Lille (the administrative centre), Roubaix, Tourcoing, Dunkirk, and Valenciennes.

Nord is composed of parts of the historic territories of Flanders, Hainaut, and Cambrésis.
