National Rifle Association

US gun organization, the largest pressure group in the USA, with about 3.6 million members (2000). The NRA opposes any major restriction on ownership of firearms. It is very influential among conservatives, especially in the Republican Party, but receives intense criticism from gun-control advocates. The association was formed in 1871 to promote better marksmanship and now promotes hunting and shooting sports, as well as gun education and safety. In May 2001, the former film star Charlton Heston was re-elected to his fourth consecutive term as NRA president.
