NSFnet

In computing, network funded by the US National Science Foundation, and an important part of the Internet backbone. In 1993 the National Science Foundation started building a very high speed Backbone Network Service (vBNS) to connect five government supercomputing centres at speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second - fast enough to transmit the entire contents of several public libraries every second.
