Naberezhniye Chelny

City in Tatarstan, in the western Russian Federation, situated on the left bank of the River Kama 200 km/124 mi east of Kazan; population (1996 est) 526,000. Traditionally a centre of the wood-processing, textile, and food industries, it expanded rapidly after 1976 as a result of the opening of the Kama Motor Works, a large truck-assembly complex, one of the largest such plants in the Russian Federation. Hydroelectric and nuclear power is generated nearby.
