Nafplio

Port of Greece, capital of the department of Argolis, at the northern extremity of the Gulf of Argos, 11 km/7 mi southeast of the town of Argos; population (2001 est) 12,400. Nafplio is one of the busiest ports of the Peloponnese region, exporting dried and preserved fruit, vegetables, tobacco, and cotton. From 1824 to 1834 it was the capital of Greece.

In the 13th century Nafplio was occupied by the Venetians, and it was taken by the Turks in 1540.
