Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.12 sec.

Nagel, Ernest (1901–1985)

Czech-born US philosopher who specialized in the philosophy of science and logic. He analysed the logical structure of scientific enquiries; and, in particular, he argued that the social sciences are capable of making useful general laws and explanations. He also held that the world contains no ultimate ingredients beyond matter.

Nagel was born in Novemesto, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), emigrated to the USA 1911, and became a US citizen 1919. He was professor of philosophy at Columbia University.

His The Structure of Science: Problems in the Logic of Scientific Explanation 1961 is a classic in this field.
