Nags Head

Town on Bodie Island, one of the Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina; population (1990) 1,800. Nags Head stands between the Atlantic Ocean, on the east, and Roanoke Sound, just south-southeast of the town of Kitty Hawk and the Kill Devil Hills. Administratively, it is part of Dare County.

Nags Head is one of the oldest resort communities on the Outer Banks. It is known for its fine beaches and excellent fishing. Jockey's Ridge State Park near here has the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast, which reach a height of 43 m/140 ft, and is popular with hikers, hang-glider pilots, and kite flyers.
