Naha

Chief port on Okinawa island, in the Ryukyu group, Japan; population (1998 est) 299,000. Industries include pottery and textiles; there is fishing. Ceramics have been produced in the city since 1682. Shuri castle, residence of Okinawa's local royalty, was reconstructed in 1993. Naha has been the capital of Okinawa prefecture since 1879.

During the US occupation of the Ryukyus (1945–72), the military headquarters were located here.

Naha is home to the University of Ryukus (1950). Features include the 16th-century Shureino Gate and Sogen Temple.
