Nahant

Town in Essex County, northeastern Massachusetts, 14 km/9 mi east-northeast of Boston; population (2000 est) 3,600. It is situated on a rocky outcrop at the end of a long peninsula that runs south into Massachusetts Bay from the city of Lynn. Nahant is an agricultural and suburban area. It was incorporated in 1853.

A popular resort from as early as the 1820s, Nahant has long been a summer retreat for many writers, painters, and wealthy Bostonians, and has many summer houses dating from the late 19th century.

Among the places besides those mentioned are Updikes's Ipswich, Longfellow's Nahant, Whittier's Amesbury (and Haverhill), Frost's Lawrence, and Kerouac's Lowell.
In those early days of testing for air droppability in 1942, the torpedo would be taken to the Naval Air Station at Quincy, MA, and loaded onto a Navy plane to be flown to the Nahant site for dropping - north of Boston Harbor.
