Nahuel Huapi, Lake

The largest of a series of lakes strung out along the east side of the Andes in the province of Neuquén, Argentina. The lake covers an area of 546 sq km/211 sq mi and is over 400 m/1,312 ft deep in places. It stands 767 m/2,516 ft above sea-level and is dominated by the high peaks of the Cordillera, especially Mount Tronador (3,460 m/11,352 ft). The natural beauty of the lake makes it a popular tourist destination. The town of San Carlos de Bariloche just over the provincial border in Río Negro is the main tourist centre for the region.

The area surrounding the lake, covering some 7,800 sq km/3,012 sq mi and including waterfalls, forest, glaciers and peaks, was designated a national park in 1903.
