Nakhon Ratchasima

Capital of Nakhon Ratchasima province, northeast Thailand, 270 km/168 mi northeast of Bangkok; population (2000 est) 204,400. The city is the major railway junction in the northeast, and has had a rail link to Bangkok since 1900. It is the commercial centre for the southern area of the Khorat Plateau, trading in rice, sugar, maize, cotton, silk, and tobacco, as well as livestock, especially cattle and pigs, and hides and skins. Industries include textiles, rice and sugar mills, and railway workshops.

There is a large air base nearby, which was taken over by the Thai air force from the US in 1976. The complex of restored 11th-century Khymer temples at nearby Phimai are important tourist attraction.
