Nakian, Reuben

Nakian, Reuben (1897–1986)

US sculptor. His rough, freely improvised work of the 1950s linked him to action painting, though figurative references (usually to mythology) remain. From the 1960s he produced more abstract, generally monumental sculptures, cast in bronze from plaster and chicken-wire maquettes, for example, Goddess of the Golden Thighs (1964–65; Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit).
